Think you understand ASP.NET Core authentication? Adorable. In this session, we’ll peel back the nice, developer-friendly abstractions you normally work with and dive head‑first into the tangled "stuff" lurking underneath.

We’ll go crawling through handlers, schemes, events, and the various moving parts that somehow work together to decide (how the system decides) who you are and what you can do. This talk won’t just show you _how_ things work, but also _why_ they often work, and why understanding the internals can save you hours of “why is this happening?” therapy.

Expect a deeply technical (level 300–400) exploration that embraces the weird corners of the authentication pipeline most developers never see. Sure, knowing these details will not change your day to day life, but they will make you a more confident, better equipped developer and maybe even give you a few things to laugh about the next time authentication goes sideways. Agentic AI enables large language models to use tools to interact beyond system boundaries. From no-code implementations in Copilot Studio to developing sophisticated solutions using LangChain and Semantic Kernel, developers of all levels can leverage tools to create agentic solutions.

But how does agentic AI work under the hood?
How are models able to understand when to use a tool and how to use it?

In this demo intensive session Alan will explain the concepts of agentic AI in detail. Starting with the basics of function calling in the Open AI models, he will cover the techniques used to provide tools to models, and how the models are able to understand and use the tools. The use of prompting to guide models and improve tool call behavior will be covered, along with guidelines for adding tools to your solution. Alan will also cover the protocols used by Open AI models as well as how the model context protocol is used to provide compatibility between services and LLM solutions.

Application performance always matters. Sometimes critically, sometimes subtly, but it’s never irrelevant. While many developers rightly caution that “premature optimisation is the root of all evil,” the opposite mistake, ignoring performance until it becomes a serious issue, can be just as problematic.

This talk explores the practical aspects of performance optimisation in .NET. We’ll look at proven strategies for monitoring, identifying, analysing, and iteratively improving applications. You’ll learn how to approach the performance lifecycle, from monitoring applications in production and pinpointing the best areas to optimise, to investing valuable engineering time where it counts most.

Through a worked example, we’ll follow a feature through the optimisation cycle. We’ll profile the application, design benchmarks, theorise improvements, and iteratively refine the implementation to reduce allocations and execution time, while balancing performance gains with code readability and maintainability.

Along the way, you’ll learn how to use tools like dotTrace, dotMemory, and BenchmarkDotNet to target areas for improvement and validate gains. We’ll discuss common optimisation opportunities, from smarter memory usage and fewer allocations to more efficient execution flow.

By the end of this session, you’ll leave with practical techniques to write faster, more efficient .NET code, along with the judgment to know when optimisation is worth the trade-off, and when it’s not.
